As I write this, members of the Elevator World, Inc. team have just returned from Dubai, U.A.E., where they, along with AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen, organiser of the world’s leading trade fair, interlift, hosted The Elevator Show (TES) Dubai. The inaugural event premiered nearly six years after it was initially conceived, much delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all the restrictions and logistical complications that came with it. It proved well worth the wait, however, as, by all accounts, it was a resounding success. The trade fair served the ever-growing Middle East and North Africa market in a city that is accessible and business friendly. TES welcomed 110 exhibitors from 14 countries and 3,700 visitors from around the world.

It was exciting and humbling for EW to partner in organizing the inaugural TES Dubai, and we are so pleased that it is filling a real need in the sector and region. EW is very thankful for all the exhibitors and attendees and our partner, AFAG, for their trust in us. We are already looking forward to the next TES Dubai planned for 2026. Look for full coverage of the 2024 event in our next issue.

In this issue, we focus on Hoistway Tools, Components and Products. EW Correspondent Dr. Lee Gray delves into the subject’s history in Elevator Alarms: 1870-1890. Patents provide insights into early operation concerns.

We also feature three enlightening Industry Dialogues:

  • A VT Conversation in London by Madeleine Olausson. KONE’s head of Major Projects in Great Britain, Samu Salmelin, talks about VT trends, sustainability and major projects.
  • Talking SMEs in India and Beyond by Shilpa Pandya. Massimo Bezzi, president of the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, shares his observations on the VT industry in India, scope for collaborations and the aspects that set it apart.
  • What If? by Kaija Wilkinson. Conceived by two men outside of the industry, Helical Motion’s Helix aims to revolutionize VT.

This issue, we are proud to feature two noteworthy projects from around Europe and one company spotlight.

  • Back to Montjuic submitted by TK Elevator. TKE leads the escalator renovation of an iconic site in Barcelona, Spain.
  • A Remarkable Transformation submitted by Stannah. Stannah installs new lifts in a London landmark, including a firefighting lift with dedicated control features to aid fire and rescue service.
  • Finding Its Niche in Denmark by Kaija Wilkinson. MinElevator brings OEMs and customers together to provide elevators for Copenhagen’s old apartment buildings.

There are a number of stellar papers presented in this issue. They cover codes and standards, maintenance, market trends, technology and more. Here are highlights from a few of them.

There is a lot of breadth in this issue. Thanks to our many correspondents and contributors, all of whom are industry experts, we can bring you complex and relevant in-depth articles covering many aspects of the multifaceted VT industry. We appreciate our writers and their willingness to pen these pieces. If you have an interest in contributing to EWEU with an article or an idea, reach out to me at
