The past few months have been busy ones for the vertical-transportation (VT) industry in and around the Middle East. ELEVATOR WORLD reporters have been traveling in the region and beyond to attend major industry events and report back to you on the latest news from them. From the Czech Republic and Russia to Iran and Brazil, we are pleased to share our findings with you.

In May, EW Correspondent Carmen Maldacena attended ExpoElevador 2023 in Sāo Paolo, Brazil. After a five-year absence, the event was received enthusiastically and welcomed more than 4,000 visitors and 80 booths.

The EW team attended multiple events in June. Our publisher, Ricia Sturgeon-Hendrick, traveled to Prague, Czech Republic, for Elevcon 2023. In Prague, At Last!, she writes about the successful event, which featured 29 speakers and a three-day program. In Great Fermator Gathering: Stronger Together, Bülent Yılmaz writes about the meeting of more than 400 solution partners from 29 countries at Fermator’s new factory in Spain. Yılmaz also attended the 11th Russian Elevator Week. Despite difficulties brought on by the war with Ukraine, including supply issues, strong market demand increased attention for the event held in Moscow.

In July, the 12th Iran LIFTEX, organized by the Iran Chamber of Cooperatives Exhibition Affairs, was held at the Tehran International Exhibition Center. In Iran LIFTEX: Inaugurated in Tehran, we learn that the country has an increasing number of local manufacturers of VT equipment and is ranked in the top 10 for annual new installations.

Cabs and Design, our focus topic for this issue, is always of importance to our manufacturers, consultants, contractors and suppliers as it is the riding public’s first, and often only, real impression and engagement with VT equipment and aesthetic. In Built To Dazzle in Oslo by Kaija Wilkinson, we find that the elevators serving one of Norway’s largest hotels are an experience in themselves.

We feature another impressive project from the region in Dolmen City Project by Sanaullah Khan. The sprawling mixed-use development in Karachi, Pakistan, includes offices, a hotel and a shopping mall. And, our China Correspondent Peng Jie explores how Canny Elevators responds to rail system market demand in China in Rising to the Opportunity.

And, finally, in this issue, we present the ELEVATOR WORLD Photo Contest 2023 winners. In this 11th annual iteration, we had more photos entered than ever before — from every corner of the world. We added a new category — Factories/Company Facilities — and expanded Illustrations to include AI. The nicest part is that we get to see so much beauty from our industry and share it with you. It makes our “elevator world” seem that much closer.

I hope to see you during the rest of our travels this year, and in between, reach out to me and let me know what you think of this issue.
