July – August 2020 Editorial

Dear Readers of Elevator World Turkey,

At this point in the pandemic, we have left the days of quarantine behind, with the hope of not experiencing it again. With the gradual normalization, several companies in our industry have gone back to work after taking various measures.  Next year seems to be very busy — full of postponed events and congresses.  Recently, The Elevator Show, organized by AFAG Messen and Elevator World, Inc., and the International Elevator & Escalator Symposium have been postponed for one season. Additionally, the Lift Expo Italia has been rescheduled to January 2021.

As you know, we focus on a separate topic in each issue. With this issue, our focus is Special Application Elevators. In this issue, you will see many foreign and local projects, while two specific projects in our country stand out.  The projects are highly significant:   Panoramic Elevators (Schindler) of Çamlıca TV Tower, which is an iconic and the highest building in İstanbul, and the 4-ton capacity panoramic elevator (Otis) of Gökmen Space and Aviation Education Centre (GUHEM) supported by TUBITAK in Bursa. Additionally, I believe you will like the articles about the sample projects in Dubai, Lisbon, London and Warsaw. 

Although several events and meetings have been canceled or held on online platforms, Heilbronn Lift Days was held following safety measures in Heilbronn, Germany. You may read the article written by Undine Stricker-Berghoff, a German correspondent of Elevator World Europe who was present at the event. 

An online meeting organized by Elevator World Inc., Virgo Communications (India) and AFAG Messen (Germany) was held with the participation of representatives of the leading international elevator associations and companies. The participants reviewed the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry. You may also read this article in this issue.  The panelists of the event, which was moderated by Anitha Raghunath and T. Bruce MacKinnon, were Roberto Zappa, president of the European Lift Association; Achim Hütter, president of VFA-Interlift e.V.; Zhang Lexiang, general secretary of the China Elevator Association; Sebi Joseph, chairman of the Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association; Donald Gelestino, president of the National Association of Elevator Contractors; Massimo Bezzi, president of the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises; Segren Reddy, editor of Elevate Africa and Fabio Aranha, President of AEW South America/Brazil.
