Konya Elevator Panel

A panel titled “The place of the Konya Lift Industry in Türkiye” was organized by Konya Elevator Panel, MMO Konya Branch, and EMO Ankara Branch Konya Provincial Representative on April 19.

The increase in the number of lift companies manufacturing in Konya, especially in the last 20 years, has started to take an important place in the manufacturing and export share of the industry. So much so that Konya is now a city with its own lift and escalator fair (Elevex Konya). There are hundreds of mechanical and electrical engineers working in the R&D and production of these companies. These young and experienced engineers came together and organized a panel consisting of three sessions on April 19 in the conference hall of the Chamber of Mechanical Engineers (MMO) Konya Branch under the leadership of the MMO Konya Branch and the Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) Ankara Branch Konya Provincial Representative.

The First Session

Industry doyens from outside the city attended the first session of the panel. Mustafa Gürel from the Ministry of Industry took the floor first in the panel moderated by Ömer Erdoğan Duransoy, chairman of the Board of Directors of the MMO Konya Branch. Gürel began his presentation by providing information about the laws, regulations and communiqués that guide the lift industry. Gürel, who also shared figures about the Konya lift industry with the data he compiled, showed our position in the world in the lift industry. According to the data he shared, the Turkish lift industry, which had a current account deficit until 2018, has become an industry that has a current account surplus with a high momentum since this year by positively differentiating. According to 2023 data, the Turkish lift industry realized imports worth US$120 million and exports worth US$255 million. Konya’s share in this export was 22%.

Serdar Tavaslıoğlu, who took the floor afterwards, conveyed the developments regarding the requirement of lifts in buildings in Zoning Regulations according to periods in his presentation titled “Accessibility and New Targets.” He shared old and new approaches to accessibility with remarkable examples from daily life. He touched on studies conducted in Türkiye and abroad on how evacuation should be done in high-rise buildings after the disaster experienced in the hotel fire in Bolu. In the second half of the presentation, he shared information about earthquake lifts and their calculations.

Another speaker of the panel, Mustafa Görmüş from D Kare Belgelendirme, shared information on how lifts will be documented from design to installation in his presentation titled “Evaluation of the Suitability of Lifts.”

The last panelist of the first session, Burak Demircan from the Izmir MMO Branch, commented on legislation with a field and technical perspective on annual periodic controls. The part where he explained the translation errors in EN 81-20/50 by comparing them with the original text was particularly striking.

Following the first session, lunch was served with a Konya-style presentation of dishes from the traditional Konya cuisine called “Konya Pilaf” where everyone eats from the same bowl.
