Celebrating Robert Masterson’s legacy of excellence as he moves on from Champion Elevator
by Don Gelestino
In February, Newark, New Jersey-headquartered Perlen Steel announced Robert Masterson as its new CEO, stating:
“His unparalleled track record of excellence, technical prowess and innovative leadership will be invaluable as we navigate a dynamic future. Masterson’s proven ability to inspire teams, drive sustainable growth and transform challenges into opportunities aligns perfectly with our commitment to quality and innovation in the steel industry.”
Masterson joins Perlen Steel from NYC-based Champion Elevator Corp., where he most recently held the role of chief of operations for New England and New Jersey. Perlen counts elevator guide rails, wire rope, counterweights, brackets and other elevator-related equipment among its specially fabricated steel products, so Masterson will not be a stranger to the industry where he had an illustrious 42-year career. Masterson leaves an indelible mark at Champion Elevator. His legacy was built on technical expertise, innovative leadership and an unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation and integrity.
A Journey Defined by Innovation and Leadership
Masterson’s career began in 1982 with hands-on roles in service, repair and modernization at Advance Elevator Co. and All Service Elevator Co., both based in New Jersey. His early years set the stage for a dynamic career, exemplified during his tenure at Garden State Elevator Industries in New York. As owner and vice president, Masterson, with his partners, excelled in maintaining, repairing, modernizing and installing a diverse collection of new construction vertical transportation. During that time, he built a company known for delivering excellence and assembled a team of top-tier technicians. His leadership was instrumental in positioning Garden State Elevator for remarkable growth, eventually culminating in its acquisition by Otis in 2002.
Masterson’s career has always been about more than just technical achievements. His strong personal bonds — especially with your author who regards him as a brother — reflect the genuine relationships he built throughout his journey.
Mastering New Challenges
At Otis, Masterson further honed his skills, serving in multiple high-profile positions — from New Jersey service operations manager to modernization manager and sales engineer, where he oversaw critical operations in service, repair and modernization. His journey continued at ThyssenKrupp Elevator Co., where, as service operations manager for Manhattan, he was tasked with overseeing the company’s largest service operation in the U.S. There, his forward-thinking approach led to the creation of a 24/7 job-specific electronic preventative-maintenance program for One World Trade Center — an innovation that continues to set industry standards.
Champion Elevator: A New Chapter of Collaboration and Impact
Joining Champion Elevator in June 2018, Masterson’s influence expanded further. As chief of Operations for New Jersey and New England, Green Technology and Sustainability advisor and senior sales engineer for Special Projects, he played a pivotal role in many of Champion’s most ambitious initiatives. Notably, his leadership in directing the world’s largest housing modernization project — Co-Op City (ELEVATOR WORLD, May 2019) — stands as a crowning achievement. Along with his select team, Masterson made this complex project a resounding success, showcasing his remarkable ability to drive operational excellence even under challenging circumstances.
A Personal Legacy Beyond the Workplace
Masterson’s career has always been about more than just technical achievements. His strong personal bonds — especially with your author who regards him as a brother — reflect the genuine relationships he built throughout his journey. At Champion Elevator, he not only drove innovation and efficiency, but also fostered a culture of friendship, collaboration and mutual support. As he embarks on a new chapter, his departure is felt deeply by all who have had the pleasure of working alongside him. Yet, the future holds promise, as his commitment to excellence will continue to inspire and guide us in new ways.
Looking Ahead
While Masterson is moving on from his role at Champion Elevator, his legacy is far from complete. His groundbreaking contributions and heartfelt leadership will continue to resonate within the industry, and his enduring friendships ensure that his impact will be felt for years to come. We celebrate Masterson’s storied career and are honored to have been a part of it. Champion Elevator eagerly anticipates continued collaboration that will drive future successes both within our company and throughout the elevator industry.
