Reaching Goals

Reaching Goals
Gary recently completed NVQ3 qualification and is now working on NVQ4.

A quick chat with Titan Elevators’ newly qualified NVQ3 engineer, Gary McSweeney

by Ellie Snee

Titan Elevators Engineer Gary McSweeney is now a newly qualified (National Vocational Qualification) NVQ3 engineer and has since begun his NVQ4 qualification. His wealth of experience within the lift industry has supported his knowledge during this journey. Your author (ES) spoke with Gary (GM) about his qualifications and what they mean to him, along with his plans for the future.

ES: What qualifications have you completed?

GM: Whilst with Titan Elevators, I have completed three qualifications, one being my NVQ3 and two LEIA (Lift and Escalator Industry Association) distance learning qualifications.

ES: What is your role with Titan Elevators?

GM: I started as a heavy mechanical repair specialist. Later in my time with Titan, I went on to service and breakdown. Now, I am currently undergoing my NVQ4 qualification and looking to complete all units available for testing.

ES: How will you benefit from this qualification?

GM: All of the qualifications I have completed, and the ones I am going to be undertaking, will enable me to carry full tests on new and modernised units. In turn, they will further my career to a technician level.

ES: What does completing the qualification mean to you?

GM: Completing these qualifications gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and it allows me to set an example to my children that, with hard work and dedication, you can reach your goals.

ES: What is your experience in the lift industry?

GM: After 17 years, I have a lot of history in the lift industry, from helping run my family company to many other roles I have undergone. I have had the pleasure of working with some of the most knowledgeable people around and dealt with some of the best managers and supervisors in the game, which I consider a privilege.

ES: How will completing the qualification impact your current role?

GM: My current role will inevitably change the further I progress; this will also have a positive impact on my career and likely carry over to my pay structure. This will also increase the level and amount of work I would then be undertaking, as well as the added responsibility.

ES: How has Titan Elevators assisted in your training?

GM: Titan has assisted in a large portion of my training and continues to do so. Titan has not only assisted with my qualifications but also my learning, which has given me the opportunity to progress, along with the guidance necessary for me to become the best possible version of myself as an engineer.

Completing these qualifications gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and it allows me to set an example to my children that, with hard work and dedication, you can reach your goals.

 – Gary McSweeney

ES: What do you hope to achieve following this qualification?

GM: I hope to achieve as much as possible and be granted as many opportunities as will be available to me to continue my growth. I also hope to grow along with the company as much as I can.

ES: What are you looking forward to now that you have the qualification?

GM: Now that I have the qualifications, I am looking forward to completing my NVQ4 and helping others progress in their careers and sharing my knowledge with others, as I have been shown myself.

ES: Do you plan to undertake any further training?

GM: I plan to undertake any and all further learning opportunities available to myself to continue to further my career and knowledge.
