A TikTok post by an account called Abstract Popular Science is explaining the reason for the brushes found on the sides of escalators with a catchy song. In a little more than one minute, the video explains the essential safety function of this often-misunderstood escalator component. Called a skirt brush or skirt deflector, it consists of an aluminum alloy base and plastic strip brushes that act as a soft barrier to cover the small gap that exists between the escalator’s steps and side baffles when running.
The video seeks to debunk the myth that these brushes are for cleaning one’s shoes. Rather, their purpose is to keep shoelaces and clothing from getting caught in the sides of the escalator, as well as prevent small items and debris from falling into the gap. In addition to improving the safety of escalators, the brushes also help extend the service life of the equipment. The skirt brush serves as a warning to passengers to stay in the middle of the escalator, avoiding the dangerous behavior of standing too close to its edges.
This educational TikTok has been liked by more than 125,000 users. Commentors have expressed surprise at the brushes’ actual purpose, with one remarking that “it’s like eyelashes for the escalator.” Others noted the importance of this safety message and shared cautionary tales of their own frightening experiences with getting shoes or clothing stuck in an escalator.
