1970s Burnaby Tower Partially Demolished For Redevelopment
Partial demolition is underway at “The Boot,” an iconic 21-story office building built in 1976 for BC Tel at the intersection of Boundary Road and Kingsway on the Burnaby side of the Vancouver-Burnaby border in British Columbia, Canada, Daily Hive reports. What’s going away is a 10-story parking podium fronting Boundary Road — the structure that formed the arch of the building’s boot-like appearance from Burnaby Road. Removal of the podium will reduce the building’s total floor area from 687,000 ft2 to 512,000 ft2, but more is on the horizon for the 6.6-acre property: five high-rise residential towers immediately adjacent to the existing office building. The office building’s boot-like appearance will be preserved on the south side, thanks to retention of the jutted terraces that front Kingsway.
