28-Story “Green” Tower in Amsterdam to Start Construction

The 28-story, mixed-use Brink Tower in north Amsterdam is set to start construction this month, with city officials giving the Meccanoo-designed plan formal approval, Archinect reports. Named for the Dutch word for “open green space,” Brink is designed to generate more energy than it consumes with features including photovoltaics on terraces and façades, rooftop wind- and solar-harvesting elements and an aquifer thermal energy storage system. With a profile defined by rounded corners and warm red brick inspired by the Amsterdam School of the 1920s, Brink Tower will offer more than 400 apartments, a residential care facility, a community center and retail outlets such as a café and a restaurant. The source observes Delft, Netherlands-based Meccanoo has enjoyed a series of recognitions lately, including the 2022 Modernism in America Award from Docomomo US for the modernization of the Mies van der Rohe-designed Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C.
