A nearly US$2-million contract for a three-story elevator addition to the Tuolumne County government-owned historic Yaney Avenue courthouse building in Sonora, California, was approved by the county’s elected supervisors, The Union Democrat reports. Installing an elevator will be a significant step toward preserving the building, enabling use of the whole building. Reuse now requires Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, which calls for installation of the elevator. The Yaney Avenue courthouse building has been sitting empty since November 2021. The contractor is Robert Boyer Construction Inc. of Sonora. Subcontractors listed by county staff are Sonora-based businesses Alley Tree and Landscaping Inc., Living Iron Steel Works, Taylor Masonry Inc. and J. Hart Plumbing, as well as Nolte Heating and Cooling of Tuolumne and Zukal Electric Inc. of Twain Harte. The project is expected to take eight months. The old courthouse building on Yaney Avenue was dedicated 126 years ago in September 1898.
