DSPS Determines Cause of Milwaukee Escalator Malfunction

Wisconsin’s Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) has determined the cause of a June 29 escalator malfunction at the American Family Field baseball stadium, home of Major League Baseball team the Milwaukee Brewers, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CBS 58 is among outlets to report. The incident, in which 11 passengers were injured, was due to a rider inadvertently activating the escalator’s lower upthrust safety device near the bottom of the unit, as well as heavy load conditions causing an overspeed fault and controller shutdown. The DSPS incident report further stated that DSPS is checking escalators of the same model throughout the state to ensure they are safe. Escalators serving the stadium are permitted to operate through November 21.
