Elevator Malfunctions Plague Connecticut Town

Elevator malfunctions, including entrapments that required fire department intervention, are plaguing the town of Stamford, Connecticut, CT Examiner reports. The source illustrated the issue by highlighting a particular high-rise residential tower where three elevator incidents happened on three consecutive days in January. Two resulted in members of the Stamford Fire Department extracting entrapped passengers. One of the rescued passengers, a resident of the high rise, said the fire chief told him it is up to residents to hold property managers accountable for elevator issues. Only elevator incidents resulting in injury or death are required by state law to be reported to the Bureau of Elevators, part of the state Department of Administration Services. From January 2021 to January 2023, Stamford Fire Department personnel responded to 339 reports of elevator entrapments — more than one call every other day. Property managers of the high rise that experienced repeated elevator issues in January told the resident they are “looking into” the problem.
