Elevator Shaft Fall Fatal for Man in Detroit

A fall down an elevator shaft in an abandoned hospital in Detroit was fatal for a man in the early morning hours of July 12, the Detroit Free Press is among outlets to report. Located in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, the five-story Southwest Detroit Hospital went bankrupt and closed in 1991 and reopened in 1997 as United Community Hospital before closing for good in 2006. The man who died was part of a group on the premises when the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. Police and the local medical examiner’s office are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
