Elevators, Escalators and More Coming to Busy Brooklyn Transit Complex
Located in an area nicknamed “the dungeon” because it’s arguably the darkest part of District 37 in Brooklyn, NY, according to City Council Member Sandy Nurse, the busy Broadway Junction subway complex is set to undergo a US$495-million accessibility upgrade, Patch is among outlets to report. Announced by Mayor Eric Adams on May 2, the plan includes seven new elevators, an unspecified number of new escalators, two public plazas and a new subway entrance on the east side of Van Sinderen Avenue. A Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) representative observed the “famously stair-filled” Broadway Junction has roughly 100,000 daily users and 2,000 MTA employees, making it one of Brooklyn’s busiest transit hubs. MTA tells ELEVATOR WORLD contracts, including for elevators and escalators, will be awarded this fall. Post-modernization, the complex will boast connections to the A/C and J/Z trains, and the Long Island Rail Road. “This is a neighborhood that deserves it, and it’s going to be the anchor of this community,” Adams said.
