Japan has taken a step toward earthquake preparedness by installing emergency toilets in some elevators for individuals who may become stranded during seismic events that lead to power outages and elevator malfunctions, Dimsum Daily reports. These specialized toilets are integrated into seats and equipped with essential supplies such as water, toilet paper, deodorant and emergency lighting. “While some critics argue that the focus should be on enhancing elevator safety rather than preparing for worst-case scenarios, supporters view this move as a stroke of genius, particularly in environments such as hospitals where elderly patients may require rest or have medical needs,” the source reports. “Given Japan’s renowned practical approach to disaster planning, this unconventional addition may soon become a standard feature in elevators, reflecting the country’s commitment to innovative solutions for unforeseen circumstances.”
