EngineeringUK CEO Reacts To U.K. 2025 Spending Review

CEO of EngineeringUK Dr. Hilary Leevers

CEO of EngineeringUK Dr. Hilary Leevers welcomed the U.K. government’s commitment to invest GBP113 billion (US$153 billion) in capital projects across energy, infrastructure, transport and housing, noting that the increased budget will “create tens of thousands more jobs in engineering and technology across the U.K., over the current Parliament and beyond.” The government’s investment will likely increase demand for skilled engineers and technologists to handle the projects the increased budget will support. The Treasury has committed to increase funding an extra GBP1.2 billion (US$1.6 billion) per annum by 2029 for apprenticeships and training for young people. Leevers noted that the government still needs to break down the barriers to access engineering and technology careers for young people, especially young women.
