Escalators Could More Than Quadruple at Busy India Rail Station

The number of escalators serving a redeveloped Visakhapatnam rail station in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, could more than quadruple under a proposal from Division Railway Manager Anup Kumar Satpaty, The Times of India reports. As part of a redevelopment underway, envisioned are 36 two-way escalators in addition to an existing eight escalators. Rail authorities would ensure unidirectional passenger flow. Located in Andhra Pradesh’s largest and most populous city on the Bay of Bengal, the station is being redeveloped with two more platforms to accommodate more train services, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the three-year project on November 12.
