Firefighters in Kuwait City, Kuwait, responded to 79 elevator malfunction complaints during a power outage on June 19, mostly involving passengers trapped inside units, the Arab Times reports. No injuries were reported. In a statement that same day, Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said there would be scheduled power cuts for up to 2 h a day as “climate change causes temperatures to rise,” outlets including France 24 reported. The ministry published a schedule of expected power cuts on June 20, urging residents to limit power use to ease the load on power plants. The source observed that Kuwait, one of the largest crude oil producers in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, is also one of the world’s hottest desert countries.
