India BIS Initiative a Major Step Forward for Elevator Safety

An initiative mandated under revised Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms requiring lift manufacturers to incorporate systems that ensure elevator cars remain securely locked until the doors are completely closed represents “a decisive step toward reducing accidents and raising the safety profile of the country’s vertical-transport sector,” Urban Acres is among outlets to report. Besides door-locking systems, the new standards call for the integration of speed governors and ascending car overspeed protection systems to stop cars in the event of control failure. Also in store: light curtains, two-way emergency communication systems and stricter protocols for fire safety and evacuation. Officials said the new code will require all manufacturers to comply by December, bringing much-needed consistency to a country where some states lack comprehensive lift laws.
