India’s Maharashtra Metro Rail Corp. (Maha Metro) has set up an operation control center (OCC) at the Range Hill Depot in Pune to remotely manage escalators, rail  speed, signaling, electricity consumption and security cameras, Hindustan Times reports. Utilizing modern technology, the center provides live data from metro lines including Vanaz to Ramwadi and PMC to Swargate, as well as future expansions. Monitoring 1 km of the metro typically requires 35 employees, but the new center reduces that to 20, according to Maha Metro Director of Systems and Operations Atul Gadgil. “The primary purpose of the OCC is to handle day-to-day operations and maintenance of the metro rail system,” Gadgil said. “All emergencies related to metro operations, passengers and public safety will be responded to in real time.”
