India’s Western Railway (WR) has commissioned new vertical-transportation (VT) equipment including 13 foot overbridges (FoBs), 18 escalators and 15 lifts in an effort to ease passenger flow and prevent trespassing at stations across the network, bringing the total numbers to 146 FoBs, 104 escalators and 49 lifts, respectively, The Free Press Journal reports. The new VT equipment is part of WR’s “Mission Zero Death” effort. Additionally, WR has embarked on public awareness campaigns, raised platform heights, added divider fencing and erected warning boards. WR comprises six divisions — Mumbai, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot and Bhavnagar — but trespassing and fatalities are particularly acute in suburban Mumbai.
