Amid safety concerns for residents of high-rise buildings raised by several members of the State Legislative Assembly in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), a draft bill of the Lift and Escalators Act has been prepared, the Hindustan Times is among outlets to report. No law currently governs installation and use of vertical-transportation equipment in UP. UP State Energy Minister A.K. Sharma on August 11 said a draft bill is ready to considered in the House of Representatives. Should it pass, it would bring “stringent action against builders, lift manufacturing companies, service providers and authorities to ensure accountability and transparency” involving malfunctioning lifts in residential societies, including in the Delhi National Capital Region.
