The Legislative Assembly of Macau passed the Elevator and Escalator Safety Legal System bill during its final day of session on August 29, Macau Daily Times reports. Affecting approximately 10,000 pieces of lifting equipment in the autonomous region on the south coast of China, the law goes into effect on April 1, 2024. From that date, entities responsible for elevators, escalators and other people- and goods-carrying equipment must arrange thorough inspections and undertake needed repairs, especially related to safety, within three years. After three years, equipment must undergo annual inspection by a certified third party. Macau Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raimundo do Rosário said Macau is home to approximately 730 registered electrical mechanical engineers, and more than 300 lift technicians, so “finding a company for maintenance and inspection should not be a problem.”
