Mareterra, a EUR2-billion (US$2.05-billion) sustainable urban development in Monaco served by 24 lifts from Italy’s Maspero Elevatori, completed in December 2024, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat reports, citing New Atlas. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Valode et Pistre Architectes and Michael Desvigne, Mareterra employs underwater caissons to expand the coastline and support marine habitats. Solar panels provide 40% of the electricity, and there is a system that utilizes the stable temperature of seawater to provide heating and cooling, as well as rainwater harvesting systems and green roofs. The 152,000-mproject was conceived as a “tribute to the Mediterranean,” and includes residences, public parks, a marina and commercial space. More than half the area is dedicated to greenery and leisure, and Mareterra boasts multiple “green” certifications.
