A new addition on the side of the 125-year-old New Bern City Hall building in North Carolina will house an elevator, and the US$3.9 million project is ahead of schedule, according to officials, the Sun Journal reported on August 30. The addition will help bring the building up to code with the Americans with Disabilities Act and make the City Hall courtroom and other areas more accessible. The addition will feature an entrance off Pollock Street and restrooms on two floors. When completed, the new 43-ft addition will “mesh in well” with the historic City Hall architecture, officials say. A sample wall on display near the construction site shows a brickwork design and color scheme that matches the late 19th century building. The city approved the contract on March 22 with construction company Daniels and Daniels. Preparation for construction began mid-May. Work on the interior is expected to begin in early 2023, and the project is scheduled to be complete by next May.
