Passengers Trapped in Failing Elevator in Indian Governmental Building

A few people were trapped in an elevator in the old collectorate government building in Margao, India, on April 9, bringing attention to governmental buildings’ failing elevators, The Times of India reports. The elevator was evacuated safely before the fire brigade could arrive, but the incident emphasized the poor conditions of several elevators in public office buildings. Malfunctioning elevators at government offices at the Osia Commercial Complex at the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) have caused extreme inconveniences, especially to senior citizens. The wing containing major public offices has only one functioning elevator that cannot stop at intermediate floors and instead only travels between the top and bottom floors. SGPDA chairperson Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar recently assured the public that the complex will have a new elevator installed in the coming week.
