Plans Revealed for Tower Set To Be Tallest in Manchester
The architect behind the five tallest buildings in Manchester, U.K., has unveiled plans to break another record in the city with proposals for an even higher tower, Building reports. Simpson Haugh has opened a consultation on a 76-story residential scheme for local developer Salboy. The scheme has been significantly revised from former plans for an office block of just 15 stories. The new proposals will contain 780 homes in the tower and a further 120 affordable homes in an adjacent 23-story block. The two blocks will add to what has become an entire district of Simpson Haugh-designed towers in the south side of Manchester’s city center, which started with Carillion’s completion of the 47-story Beetham tower in 2006, which was the city’s tallest building until 2018 with the addition of developer Renaker’s 64-story South Tower. Renaker submitted a planning application for an even taller 71-story scheme in July, also designed by Simpson Haugh, which had been set to be the city’s tallest tower and the U.K.’s tallest outside of London before Salboy’s revision of the Viadux scheme. A planning application will be submitted soon for the scheme with Salboy hoping to be on-site next year.
