Royal Crescent Steps Close Again for New Elevator Shaft Pit Preparations

A set of The Royal Crescent steps in Madeira Terrace in Brighton, England, U.K., have closed for a third time as the next phase of building work and elevator installation continues, BBC reports. The historical steps, which provide access to the lower promenade, closed in March and April for work. Brighton & Hove City Council said it has closed again until August 13 to prepare the ground for the new elevator shaft pit. Built in the late 1800s, Madeira Terrace is an 865-m long stretch of seafront arches and promenade on Madeira Drive. Work began on restoring the first 28 of the terrace’s 151 arches in November 2024. More steps are also set for further closure between August 26 and September 9. The council said it hoped the first phase of restored arches would open to the public in 2026.
