Miami International Airport (MIA) is about to undergo a “transformative” upgrade involving 372 pieces of vertical-transportation (VT) equipment — elevators, escalators and moving walks, 7 News Miami reports. The five-year contract, worth approximately US$12 million per year, was awarded to Schindler, MIA tells ELEVATOR WORLD. Earlier this year, Miami-Dade County reviewed six proposals, with Schindler coming out on top among several independents and one other OEM, which withdrew its proposal. A complete makeover is in store for 145 of the VT units, with MIA officials aiming to upgrade or completely replace at least 30 units each year, according to 7 News Miami. MIA saw a record-high 50.7 million travelers in 2022 — a 10% increase over the 2019, pre-pandemic record. MIA Director and CEO Ralph Cutie said as MIA continues to grow, “our goal is to match that growth with customer service excellence at all of our touchpoints.”
