Schindler will provide 150 vertical-transportation (VT) units, including 44 Schindler 7000 elevators, 65 Schindler 5500 elevators, 36 Schindler 9300 escalators and five platform lifts to Masar, a mixed-use “giga-project” in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. When Schindler announced the contract on July 11, the OEM observed it is building on its partnership with Umm Al Qura Development & Construction Co., the outfit behind the 1.2 million-m2, mixed-use development. Schindler equipment will transport people and goods through the shops and restaurants at street level to hotels above. The Schindler R.I.S.E robotic installation system, making its debut in Saudi Arabia, will be used to install all of the Schindler 7000 elevators. “R.I.S.E can autonomously operate around the clock, drilling and setting anchor bolts and improving the quality and speed of construction, as well as on-site safety,” Schindler observed.
