Served by Otis VT, NYC’s the Spiral Wins CTBUH and Marks Firsts

Bjarke Ingels Group’s (BIG) first supertall and first commercial high rise in NYC, The Spiral on the northern edge of the High Line at 66 Hudson Boulevard, was recently named the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s (CTBUH) Best Tall Building in the 300-399 m category, beating out competitors in Australia, China and the U.A.E. The 314-m (1,031-ft) supertall is served by an Otis vertical-transportation (VT) system that consists of 54 SkyRise® high-rise elevators, including the first SkyBuild® construction elevators in NYC; 10 hydraulic elevators; Two LinkTM escalators; and Otis’ Compass360® destination-dispatch system integrated with the tower’s security system. Developed by Tishman Speyer Properties, the 66-story office building has what BIG describes as a “ziggurat silhouette,” getting its name from a series of stepped terraces that wrap around its exterior. Other companies involved in The Spiral include general contractor Turner Construction Co.; mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineer Cosentini Associates; and VT consultant Edgett Williams Consulting Group. The 2.8 million-ft2 property is aiming for LEED Silver certification.
