The Director General of the National Center for Arts and Culture Hassoum Ceesay has announced that the Arch 22 in Banjul, Gambia, will receive an elevator as part of the landmark’s 60th anniversary, The Voice Gambia reports. The major upgrade to the commemorative arch’s accessibility will enhance its appeal to visitors, especially those with mobility impairments. The elevator will allow visitors to more easily access the view of Banjul at the top of the arch, which was declared a National Monument in 1997. The elevator’s installation is part of a larger, comprehensive renovation effort funded by Gambian authorities as part of the celebration of The Gambia’s Diamond Jubilee. Ceesay said, “Visitors will no longer have to climb the stairs to reach the top. The lift, once installed, will be an invaluable addition, making the Arch more accessible for all, including the elderly and those with mobility challenges.”
