Vertical-transportation (VT) equipment importers in Uzbekistan are seeking private-sector help to release at least 330 pieces of VT equipment stuck in customs warehouses in the wake of an import halt that took effect in March, YangiUylar reports. Elevators and escalators imported from nearly 50 different manufacturers are under customs control in warehouses. VT importing entrepreneurs have been unable to pass their goods through customs since March 20, when their compliance certificates were suddenly canceled, stemming from the invalidation of 17 compliance certificates. The State Committee of Industrial Safety of the Republic of Uzbekistan said the cancellation was due to requirements for elevators changing, but the committee’s accreditation status has been suspended. Measures importers are calling for include involving the private sector in the VT testing and compliance market and establishing a single compliance certificate for VT goods of the same brand and model imported under the same contract using only a single sample.
