Lagos Hospital Elevator Not Replaced Two Years After Fatality

Two years after a faulty elevator claimed the life of a young doctor at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Lagos State Chapter has decried the failure of the Lagos State Government to replace the elevator or complete renovations at the House Officers’ Quarters, PUNCH Healthwise reports. In a statement marking the second-year remembrance of the event, NMA officials say they were “deeply disappointed that the state government had not fulfilled promises made after her death.” NMA describes the incident as a result of “ineptitude” and noted that, despite public outcry, official visits and a panel of enquiry that was constituted following the incident, little has changed structurally at the facility. The association has demanded that the building be named after the late physician, calling for a complete rehabilitation of the structure and installation of a functioning elevator before the end of 2025. The NMA has pledged to continue honoring the memory of the deceased doctor and reassured her family and the medical community that her legacy would not be forgotten.
