New, old friends: (l-r) Antona and Oirere

John Antona, longtime ELEVATOR WORLD contributor and member of its Technical Advisory Committee, recently reconnected with his native Africa and made a “new, old friend” — EW Africa Correspondent Shem Oirere, who is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Antona, who retired in 2017 after a more-than-40-year career in the elevator industry, tells EW one of the best experiences of his trip was meeting with Oirere. Antona and Oirere plan to collaborate on future articles about Africa, a unique, complex and challenging market. He shared a couple of pictures from the recent meeting, as well as the following:

“I traveled through Kenya, Tanzania and the great island of Zanzibar. I love Africa and now realize how lucky I was to have been born there. I had almost forgotten my origins, being involved in the daily routine of the modern world. One of my best experiences was meeting with Oirere in Nairobi. I never had such a great time talking to someone new, and we are now officially new, old friends.”

Since 1953, Elevator World, Inc. has been the premier publisher for the global vertical transportation industry. It employs specialists in Mobile, Alabama, and has technical and news correspondents around the world.
