TKE Says CPSC Home-Elevator Lawsuit “Ignores Facts”

In a press release issued on July 7 shortly after the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) announced it had filed a lawsuit to order Thyssenkrupp Access Corp. to recall home elevators it manufactured until it exited the business in 2012, TK Elevator (TKE) said the information from CPSC “puts semantics ahead of real attempts to make consumers safer while conveniently ignoring the fact that CPSC has been fully aware of [the company’s] communication outreach efforts for years.” TKE states it is already taking actions ordered by the lawsuit, including providing free inspections, free hardware and free installations to affected homeowners. The issue involves small children suffering serious injuries or dying from falling into a gap between the doors and under a moving elevator car. TKE says it has, since 2013, made “extensive outreach efforts” to homeowners about the potential hazard and offered guards to reduce gap space since 2013.
