Lightning Strike Takes Out Michigan Elevator

A lightning strike from a summertime storm caused some electrical issues for Bay City Hall in Bay City, Michigan, including repairs to the building’s elevator, M Live reported in August. The strike on July 24 caused damage to electronic components in City Hall’s clock tower, elevator, computer and telephone equipment, HVAC control systems and automatic door lock control systems. Once repairs were underway to restore the systems, it became apparent that the elevator needed some extra parts and more time to get it operational again. To make do without the elevator, the city is providing special accommodations by having staff members come down to the first floor when needed, and the August commission meeting was live streamed on the first floor for patrons who wished to attend. It is estimated that the elevator will be back up and running by the end of August.
