25-Year-Old Falls to Her Death Down Elevator Shaft in Italy

A 25-year-old woman fell four stories down an empty elevator shaft to her death in Fasano, southern Italy, on July 1, Unilad is among outlets to report. The incident occurred in an apartment building. When the woman called the elevator on the fourth floor, the doors opened but the lift cabin was not there. She stepped forward and fell down the empty shaft onto the cab’s roof. The woman’s father alerted emergency services after he called her cell phone and realized the ringing was coming from inside the elevator shaft. Firefighters who responded to the scene said she died on impact. Investigators are trying to determine why the unit’s safety mechanisms failed.
