“A Piece of History”

Other cards in this 2009 set include special inserts celebrating Upper Deck’s 20th anniversary and player autographs.

In an unexpected, yet nostalgic, crossover, ELEVATOR WORLD recently received a letter containing a baseball card. Addressed to Dr. Lee Gray, curator for EW’s online elevator museum, the note from Texas attorney Seth Ellerin explained that the enclosed Upper Deck (UD) card, “Historical Moments: Elevator Invented,” was a donation. Ellerin wrote that he has given his sports collection to museums throughout the world.

With gold foil accents, the card features an illustration of Elisha Graves Otis demonstrating his safety elevator on the front and a brief description on the back. It is part of a 200-card set titled “2009 UD A Piece of History.” In addition to cards showcasing major league veterans, stars and rookies, designs also depict historical moments spanning decades and continents. From the completion of the Taj Mahal to the invention of email, a total of 50 significant events and accomplishments make up this collection.

This interesting piece of elevator (and baseball) memorabilia will become part of EW’s vast archive of all things vertical transportation. Many thanks to Mr. Ellerin for his contribution!
