Automated Car-Parking Systems

Tedra provides solutions for the basic problem of car parking.

Ajay Raina (AR), director and CEO, Tedra Automotive Solutions Pvt. Ltd., explains to your author (SSP) the future demand drivers for automated car-parking systems in India and their role in the market’s development as a dedicated solution provider.

SSP: How do you see the market for automated car-parking systems in 2024 and beyond, and what will be the demand drivers?

AR: The market is growing at a good 40% year-over-year. Acceptance and awareness about automated parking among the masses has substantially improved, thus driving the demand further. We have seen a number of good brands that have made their presence known in this segment over the last decade.

The economic boom, urbanization and the population explosion have seen personal means of transport like cars and two wheelers strangling city centers. At 32 mts./car that are required, ideally, to park a vehicle, this is probably the most pinching and expensive use of real estate in urban India. Compounded by a lack of policy and space in our cities, it surely has made urban living and commuting chaotic and nightmarish.

This is becoming true of all our major cities, be it Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune or Kolkata. Recognizing this fact, we are seeing regulations from local governments making provisions for sufficient car parking mandatory. Ease of living is becoming the new buzz; people no longer must think about what to do with their cars when they get to their destination. Therefore, the smart parking industry will continue to evolve and grow as an increasing number of cities struggle with traffic congestion and inadequate parking availability.

SSP: What is the unique selling point of Tedra Automotive Solutions Pvt. Ltd. and its diverse array of parking solutions?

AR: As the very name suggests, we are a dedicated solution provider for the basic problem of car parking. We create space from less footage using height, width and depth intelligently to provide automated car-parking systems customized to customer needs, thus optimizing parking and saving civil costs and valuable real estate.

SSP: What importance is given to safety standards for passenger car-parking solutions at Tedra Automotive Solutions?

AR: Safety is our primary concern at Tedra. People are emotionally connected to their cars, and we appreciate this, so it becomes our responsibility to ensure that cars are safely parked and our systems are fail-proof. We have an intense quality program that runs across the process from procurement of material to in process and final quality inspections. Safety photo sensors, mechanical locks, impact softeners, emergency switches and lights are part of our offerings. We also conduct regular on-site inspections, trainings and maintenance audits to ensure safety, performance and customer delight.

SSP: What has been the feedback from real estate project developers and end users?

AR: We have received very positive feedback and have learned a lot from our customers. This, in turn, has contributed to product improvements and also given us a way forward for the future. Having an installation base of more than 15,000 car-parking spaces, we are fortunate to have all major real estate companies as our customers across the country.

SSP: How does being headquartered in Pune give Tedra Automotive Solutions an edge?

AR: Pune remains a hub for most of the car-parking manufacturers: Five major companies are based in and around Pune. This helps us, as we have an established vendor base, a ready talent pool and a central location that can cater to West and South India, which comprises 80% of the car-parking market.

SSP: In what way is Tedra Automotive Solutions leading the “Make in India” initiative, and what is your future vision for the company?

AR: From day one, Tedra has had its own in-house R&D and an indigenization program. With a design team of more than 20 people, all our design and technology are in house and Made in India. The raw material products we use are sourced from the best and most recognized brands in India. We do not depend on any source that is out of the country, neither for our simplest solutions like stack park nor for fully automated systems like a cart or a tower, and we are proud of this achievement. Our next move takes us a step further, introducing robotic solutions for parking that will be three times faster, consume less energy and be super simple and safe to operate.
