The Beverly Center, a 900,000-ft2 mall in Los Angeles, dressed up its iconic street-facing escalators along Beverly Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard last year with two striking installations. According to The Architect’s Newspaper, local artist Pae White’s Day for Night for Day (shown here) is a light sculpture comprising more than 900 unique pieces of hand-shaped neon. The source continued:

“Each element within the five-story piece is color-keyed to a perceptual temperature (warmth) in the daylight spectrum, resulting in a constellation of vibrant hues akin to the many characters of the Los Angeles sunset. White was inspired to create the two site-specific pieces [Moonsets for a Sunrise, another White installation, faces La Cienega Boulevard] after observing the unique qualities of the glass-enclosed escalators and the constant movement they provide between the parking lots and the main interior spaces.”

Smith Tower in Seattle was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River when it opened in 1914; today, it is dwarfed by some of its neighbors, but a recent renovation has given new life to the beloved landmark.
