Budding Engineer

Budding-Engineer

When Ian Strong, a second-grader at Glenwood Landing Elementary School in Glen Head, New York, learned his school was organizing a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics fair, he knew exactly what his project would be: revealing the mysteries of one of his favorite inventions, the elevator. For his task, Ian conducted months of hands-on research, including an interview with Kenneth V. Breglio, president of BP Elevator (BPE), a Bronx, New York-based provider of maintenance, repair and modernization. Information in hand, Ian then created his display, which included a model of a traction elevator, complete with counterweight, plus elevator facts ingeniously hidden behind opening “hall doors.” EW Correspondent Matt Jackson, who brought this inspiring story to our attention, said all that hard work paid off — Ian came away with first prize! No word yet on whether Breglio has offered the young man a job with BPE.
