Do. Or do not. There is no “try.” This immensely popular gem of wisdom, imparted by Jedi Master Yoda to Luke Skywalker during his training in the movie “Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back” has great relevance for the evolution and growth of a concept that has been rapidly gaining prominence — sustainability.
As compared to the days when perfunctory efforts by organizations were lauded for their having at least initiated this concept, it is becoming evident that an “all or nothing” stratagem is the only one that has any chance of succeeding. Corporations across the spectrum have been encouraged to adopt an all-encompassing methodology.
Sustainability has become an inherent part of brand positioning. Leveraging technology, input materials, sourcing norms and process flow, it has been accorded immense significance with visible results. The ELEVATOR WORLD India 3Q 2022 issue content theme, “Holistic Approach to Sustainability,” has experts and stakeholders examining its myriad implications for the vertical-transportation (VT) industry.
The rising emphasis on sustainability can be gauged from either a real estate perspective or a VT perspective. However, based on observations and experiences, going forward it is quite obvious that the pace of progress will largely depend upon how well the two are integrated or synced for optimum impact and benefits.
While “green” buildings have been able to capitalize on their unique selling proposition and attract discerning customers, VT manufacturers have also been consistently creating more and more energy-efficient models. At the same time, it is equally important that end-users also do their part. After all, as they say, it takes two to tango!
Visitors to many residential high rises are pleasantly surprised to see that certain elevators in each wing are “shut down” as per a pre-planned schedule during the afternoon low-traffic hours. Similarly, to minimize power consumption, escalators at malls and office buildings are kept in standby or idling mode with sensors that start them only when someone approaches.
For it to be truly holistic in nature, sustainability should not be restricted to only manufacturing. The end usage also matters a great deal. One hopes that enhanced awareness and incentives to promote the concept, coupled with an understanding and willingness to participate in the quest for sustainability paves the way for noteworthy accomplishments in the future.
