Elevator law, standards and safety discussed to create greater awareness and prevent accidents.
The Elevator Brother Association of Maharashtra (EBAOM), an elevator trade association, organized its first statewide technical seminar, “Elevator Law, Indian Standards & Safety,” on June 24 from 5-9 p.m. at Mitra Mandal Auditorium, Sarasbagh, Pune. The main objective of the technical seminar was to create greater awareness among lift contractors, various lift equipment manufacturing factories and construction professionals about technical aspects so the entire state of Maharashtra could be free from elevator accidents.
The proceedings commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Uday Dambe, lift inspector Mumbai, Government of Maharashtra, who presided over the program. He was joined by Assistant Lift Inspectors Abhijit Kasture and Arjun Jadhav; Nitin Suryavanshi, electrical inspector, Pune; Dilip Patel, director, Umiya Engineers; and Sayaji Shriram, assistant electrical inspector. After the lamp-lighting ceremony, they were congratulated with badges, bouquets, shawls and coconuts as per Indian tradition. The founding members of EBAOM, who have contributed much to establishing the association, were commended with a badge of honor.
Dr. Mahesh Shinde, president, EBAOM, shared the agenda and explained the purpose of organizing the program. He introduced the association and assured all members that their problems would be solved. He also emphasized that conducting technical seminars will help EBAOM members to understand new rules and regulations, which will be beneficial, as it will enable them to work well in the future.
Addressing the gathering, Dambe and Jadhav explained the causes of various types of accidents and shared guidance on how they could be avoided. Dambe specified that a test certificate should be obtained from the selling company before buying any product. No cheap, duplicate or copied material should be used in the lift. Videos of actual accidents that have taken place due to unsafe materials were shown and their causes explained. The importance of using safe equipment and tools while performing elevator construction and maintenance was underlined. Every contractor must be given safety information to minimize accidents, he said.
Kasture provided detailed information about the various types of lift acts and Indian standards. He covered the laws concerning traction lifts, hydraulic lifts, home lifts, etc., under the Bombay Lift Act. He highlighted the fact that the concerned government office should be notified within 24 h of an accident. Suryavanshi explained how the wiring used in the elevator should be done and how accidents can happen due to improper wiring. He also highlighted the importance of the residual current circuit breaker.

The seminar, moderated by Hanumant Naik, Advisor EBAOM was attended by machine manufacturers, lift contractors and citizens. The vote of thanks was given by Sameer Anwar.
