Device ensures accuracy of important safety parameter.

Nothing is more important in the elevator and escalator industry than safety. This means that each part of a unit needs to be properly maintained and kept in working order. For escalators, this includes comb plates and comb plate impact switches. Having an escalator equipped with a comb plate is crucial for ensuring the safety of the end user and preventing shutdowns and injuries. Maintenance providers should properly test and adjust this fixture to meet applicable code requirements. KONE Spares’ Combplate Impact Fixture Test Kit tests the comb plate impact switches of any make of escalator to make sure they are calibrated to the correct force setting so they will function and react to entrapments properly.

This test kit is designed to make the adjustment and calibration of the comb plate impact switches easy and accurate. This accuracy is key to ensuring safety. The purpose of these switches is to detect if an object becomes trapped between the comb plate and moving steps of the escalator. If this occurs, the device initiates an immediate shutdown of the unit to prevent any potential accidents or injuries. A lot of weight rides on the proper functioning of this component to protect the end user.

The product can be used on any escalator equipped with existing comb plate switches. Manufacturer installation and maintenance instructions for specific escalator models are included in the kit. The kit measures hydraulic-jack pressure correlating to specific horizontal and vertical pull forces across the comb plate. A comb segment is removed, and the jack is secured to the comb plate to test the impact switches. Using the KONE Pressure Gauge Kit, technicians can then measure the hydraulic pressure and correlate it to the force (in pounds) it takes to trigger either the horizontal or vertical comb plate impact switch. The measured force is then compared against the switch calibration table.

Several benefits come with the proper testing of an escalator’s comb plate impact switches. This test kit allows for technicians to make sure they are adjusting the switches to their code-required, safe settings. Our industry is focused on delivering a high standard of maintenance that keeps vertical-transportation equipment in good operating condition. This product can help our workers ensure the safety of the end user and make safety a priority.

Figure 4: Getting the weight for a car with a tie-down system featuring compensation ropes takes only two steps: place the Henning device above the car hitch and measure the car weight. One must step off the top of the car prior to any load measurements so that his or her weight will not be a consideration in attaining car weight.
