TKE team installs 48 units in roughly 240 days.

G Tower was developed by and hosts the headquarters of mobile gaming company Netmarble in Seoul, South Korea. Standing 39 floors and with seven stories below ground, the new digital industry office complex provides office space to venture, IT and knowledge industries. The development also includes a park, sports center, game museum and medical center to serve nearby residents.

Challenge

The office building is expected to accommodate around 5,000 office workers; therefore, the vertical mobility solution must be designed to handle the peak hours traffic of office staff, as well as business and leisure visitors heading to the offices, retail and recreational facilities.

TK Elevator (TKE) was also given a tight schedule of eight months to complete the installation of 40 elevator and 8 escalator units for the building’s inauguration.

Solution

To cope with the projected passenger flow, TKE passenger elevators were separated into four groups: low, middle and high zones served by TWIN – the sole optimum solution for office tenants – and four single-car elevators in the shuttle group exclusively used by facility management. TKE’s innovative TWIN elevator system allows two independent elevator cars to operate inside the same shaft, greatly reducing space-use and passenger waiting and traveling times. The resulting average waiting time for passengers does not exceed 30 s, and average time to destination takes no more than 100 s.

TKE sent a dedicated professional team to expedite installation. By using the “half-hoistway” installation method, the installation process commenced before the building structure and machine rooms were fully completed. False cars were also used to facilitate scaffold-less rail installation, effectively reducing the time needed to install guiderails and hoistway equipment during construction. As a result, the TKE team managed to install all 48 units in roughly 240 days, finalizing the project in September 2020.

Strategic Value

Particularly noteworthy for this project was the innovation and digital focus of the building. Being chosen by the developer for this high-tech office building with a sustainability theme highlights the competitiveness of TKE’s products and solutions in this regard. The TWIN can be flexibly arranged to operate both elevator cars simultaneously at peak hours or only one car at other times to conserve energy.

The TWIN and TKE’s other elevators can be paired with our digital solutions, including MAX control and monitoring solutions for remote control and monitoring, as well as cloud-based operational insights for facilities managers. Our AGILE destination control system can also be integrated for intelligent grouping and dispatching of elevator cars.

Extensive upgrade and expansion possibilities of TKE products and solutions executed successfully on a high-tech and sustainability-themed project will serve as a testimonial for TKE to the IT and digital industry in South Korea.

The TWIN system has been well received in South Korea since its introduction: 68 systems have been installed in 10 sites serving thousands of passengers in some of South Korea’s prime locations.
