Isle of Signs

Isle-of-Signs

ELEVATOR WORLD Technical Advisory Group member and contributor John Antona spied a well-signed escalator while traveling through the Grenada airport. He explained:

“One photo clearly states that the escalator is used as stairs. This is not code compliant in the U.S., as escalator steps do not comply with the design of stairs. But, then, I noticed the sign that relates to the usage of the escalator when functioning. These are some interesting safety requirements. I am curious to see what the public reaction would be in other countries. . . if you dare publish the photos.”

Known as the “Isle of Spice,” the main island of the small Caribbean country is a popular destination for tourists around the globe and one of the world’s largest exporters of nutmeg and mace. Perhaps, in the industry, it could also be known for clear and noticeable signage!
