MONTANARI Revamps Academy Project on Traction Machines

The importance of ongoing training for the Indian elevator industry

by Eng. Vikas Patil

In today’s fast-paced world, staying ahead means constantly evolving, learning and embracing growth. Ongoing and high-quality training represents a core target for the Indian elevator industry eager to unlock potential of its professionals and ensure safety and efficiency of local elevator systems.

As technology advances and safety standards tighten while the traction machine remains the heart of reliable vertical transportation, the need for specialized training in traction systems has never been more critical and urgent.

Recognizing this gap, MONTANARI has recently revamped its Academy Project, a comprehensive Training Program on Traction Machines, designed to equip technicians, engineers and elevator professionals with the skills required to install, inspect, maintain and troubleshoot both geared and gearless traction systems with confidence. Launched almost a decade ago, MONTANARI ACADEMY sees an experienced Technical Team by India facility and Italy Headquarters committed to share technical insights with industry professionals through classes, workshops, product demonstrations and on-site interventions.

Why Training on Traction Machines and Safety Components Matters

While modern elevators are powered by increasingly sophisticated control systems, it’s the traction machine that handles the literal heavy lifting. Improper alignment, wear or miscalibration can lead to downtime, excessive energy consumption or even safety risks.

As the majority of maintenance callbacks in older installations can be traced to improperly serviced traction machines, MONTANARI specifically addresses those pain points through dedicated Academy Sessions. In 2024, we held multiple programs covering relevant technical topics:

  • Grooves wear and consequences on adherence
  • Traction machine selection according to elevator installation demands and in consideration of type of roping and relevant testing
  • Effective maintenance management
  • Speed governor and safety system

Among all academy events, we are especially proud of our Program for Lift Inspectors, the very first line of defense in preventing mechanical failures and ensuring code compliance of Indian elevator systems. Our customized Training Program provides inspectors with in-depth knowledge of traction machines and safety mechanisms, precise selection techniques, fault identification, proactive maintenance and the latest regulatory updates — to let them uphold the highest safety standards in every shaft and pit

For us, it’s not just training — it’s a mission and our commitment to safety and performance to elevate the industry we serve. By bringing industry partners and stakeholders together in a shared learning environment, we indeed foster collaboration, mutual understanding and growth critical to responding effectively in high-stakes situations and ever-changing scenarios.

Proud of the strides made, for 2025 we decided to intensify our training efforts, focusing on key industry professionals and socially relevant stakeholders. At the end of July, MONTANARI targeted a comprehensive Training Program for the Mumbai Fire Department, addressed to approximately 200 fire engineers and officers. In the fall, a Training Tour for Lift Inspectors will take place, providing inspectors of main regional offices across India with essential technical insights on traction machines and latest Code updates.

As excellence is not an accident yet the result of consistent training and effort, MONTANARI stays at the forefront to elevate its industry and ensure technical competence and maximum safety — given that safety isn’t expensive; it’s priceless.
