New Residential High Rise Going Up on Westside

A Gensler-designed 34-story building currently under construction on Los Angeles’ Westside is poised to become the area’s first residential high rise in nearly 40 years, Archinect reported in May. The 376-unit tower, rising west of the 405 Freeway, is being developed by Douglas Emmett and includes a 40,000-ft2 privately owned and managed pocket park designed by SWA Group. The building is to include a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom units, as well as 19 affordable housing units. Renderings show a glass-wrapped tower with wide balconies.

Latest Version of Long-Envisioned Santa Ana Project Greenlit

City officials in Santa Ana approved the latest, 37-story iteration of a project from developer Michael Harrah that has been in the works for 20 years, the Orange County Register reported in May. With one councilwoman objecting, the move came as Harrah added up to 415 residences to a plan that includes offices and commercial space at 1109 North Broadway. If built, One Broadway Plaza will be the tallest building in Orange County. Proponents said the tower would create much-needed jobs for laborers hit hard by the coronavirus economic fallout and signal the city’s rebirth, while opponents pointed to concerns about increased traffic and noise.
