A subsidiary of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Arter was active in its building on Istiklal Street from 2010-2018 and moved to its new building in Dolapdere on September 13, 2019. PERA Mühendislik, which met all of the special technical demands of the management in accordance with the standards and regulations, undertook freight and car lift projects.
Pera Mühendislik, which has especially longstanding experience in the design, installation, modernization, maintenance and other services of all types of hydraulic elevators, designed project-specific demands and provided the installation of high-tech elevator systems, and also carried out the other services of the electrical elevators in Arter Building after the installation.
Having received design control consultancy service from Liftinstituut Solutions, Pera Mühendislik prepared project-specific constructions and certified them.
Constructions specific for the project are listed below:
- MRL Electrical car lift with a rated capacity of 8,100 kg, a rated speed of 1 m/s and a travel distance of 29.2 m.
- MDL Electrical freight lift with a rated capacity of 7,400 kg, a rated speed of 1 m/s and a travel distance of 46.8 m.
- Customized sliding doors which have fire certification, 2.500 X 3.700 mm (Width X Height)
- Customized short door opening system
- Customized deck over the cabin
Graphical observation and operational data of the elevators available to the technical office.
The elevators, designed and implemented by Pera Mühendislik in 2019, were put into service at Arter, the contemporary art institution of the Vehbi Koç Foundation.
An outstanding project
Berk Özbelli of Pera Mühendislik said, “The extraordinary elevators of the project excited and motivated us. As a result of the decisions taken at the end of the coordinated negotiations, we entered into a busy manufacturing and procurement period. We have produced effective solutions with our engineering experience throughout the manufacturing processes. The speed and the door dimensions demanded are innovations for our industry, when compared with the capacity of the elevators.”
Several innovations through the Project
Özbelli, mentioning a few innovations, said, “Following our negotiations with our supplier, a 3,700-mm-long door for the freight lift was manufactured, and its certification process was completed. Another example is that the first landing door of the freight lift was manufactured at a height of 2,500 mm, unlike the other landing doors. Although the landing door and the cabin door were in different sizes, they were driven by the same mechanism.”
An experienced team and correct planning
Considering the manufacturing and installation of the elevators, Özbelli underlined that they were carried out within the framework of the work schedule under very strict occupational safety rules. Özbelli emphasized that the installation of high-tonnage elevators was completed within the desired time, thanks to the experienced team and proper planning. He said, “As Pera family, we are proud to take part in this project, which we call our masterpiece. We would like to thank Arter, the contemporary art institution of Vehbi Koç Foundation, for making us one of the partners in this project, which is a great contribution for the country’s culture.”
About ARTER
Arter’s new home was designed by British Grimshaw Architects, selected by an international project competition in 2013. The Grimshaw Architects team shaped the design of the building around two themes: openness and fluidity. The target of the team was to ensure that Arter’s new building becomes an artistic meeting point that establishes strong relations with its surroundings.
One of the goals was to help Arter’s visitors to enjoy different artistic and even spatial experiences without feeling detached from the city. With this approach, Arter has been designed as a kind of dynamic set of spaces. The center will be able to accommodate many programs and opportunities in this new building and will occupy an important place among the cultural structures of Istanbul.
Arter, which is a dynamic set of spaces, is formed of spaces that are visually connected and physically interlinked. This setup provides a structure for a program that brings different disciplines together and a structure that encourages creativity and interaction with each of the spaces. The building has a total gallery area of approximately 4,000 m2 spread over six floors, and also two performance halls. In addition to exhibition galleries Arter’s new building also has two performance halls, learning areas, a library, a conservation laboratory, an arts bookstore, a terrace, a backyard and a café.
Arter’s façade, which welcomes visitors with its landscaped design, including green spaces, elevated pools and benches, is formed of glass-reinforced concrete planes. Planes consisting of three-dimensional convex and concave, diamond-shaped panels are completed by handmade glazed ceramic surfaces. As the sun moves along during the day, light and shadow gather on different surfaces of each plane, and reflect the sky on ceramic surfaces. When it is seen from a distance, the building looks like a rich palette of light, color and texture, thanks to its reflective surfaces. In this way, with its layered structure, the design of the building establishes a strong dialog with both the contemporary architecture and also the architectural tradition of the city.
Arter’s new building in Dolapdere, bears the signature of Thornton Tomasetti, Max Fordham and Neill Woodger Acoustics, under the leadership of Grimshaw Architects. Following its construction, which started in 2015, Arter opened its doors in 2019.
